Rantings and tirades of a frustrated economist.
Now they have more room for women's studies, racial studies, and gay and lesbian studies.
Did I read it correctly? They are killing a $1.7m program that, according to one quote, brings in $5m of research funds.Well, at least they have... basket weaving.
They're going to save 1.7 million by cutting this department; what'd they do last year?"Many look to the athletic department, which just this year took in about $99 million, an increase of more than $2 million from last year."Yes, because post-secondary is all about the sports and fraternity life. We don't need no stinking education!
I love how they have to bring in the sports, allowing so many commenters to mockingly state that they're cutting out compsci to give money to illiterate football players. What a false dichotomy, created by a female journalist. Let's just never mention the money poured on various -studies programs, campus 'diversity', etc., that don't lead to jobs for students like compsci or bring in money for the school, like the football program probably does.
This is why I voted for Rick Scott:http://htpolitics.com/2011/10/10/rick-scott-wants-to-shift-university-funding-away-from-some-majors/http://www.gainesville.com/article/20120315/ARTICLES/120319725&tc=ixNotice how the proposed cuts in liberal arts in the second article are about the same value as the $1.7 million to be saved from dropping computer science. The ivory tower idiots want to scream and yell (and drop computer science in favor of liberal arts), but common sense still has the final hold on the state purse strings.I'm gonna do everything I can to make sure Scott gets another term, and I hope that next time around, I get to see my favorite tenured womens' studies professor asking me the all important question: "Do you want fries with that?".
I'm sure the Chinese and the Indians will let them keep the football team. If that's all they care about why should I care about more.If I had kids, however, I'd teach them Hindi.
